Crowning Kings of Monsters by James Rowland
Overlooking books because of their covers is something we're all guilty of from time to time. I very nearly passed over Crowning Kings and Monsters because of its cover, but I'm so glad that I didn't.
New York, 1927. Prohibition had struck Danny Donovan hard. It's tough to do your job as a private investigator when the tools of the trade have been outlawed by Congress: the use of magic has been banned. Unfortunately, not everyone is subservient to the law. Danny is thrown into the world he once loved. His client? Senator Craigson, the mastermind of the whole prohibition movement.
Oh HELLO. A noir urban fantasy novel? Cross-genre is always a weakness of mine, but the idea of taking something so integral to the noir genre (prohibition and private eyes) and turning it into a fantasy story just caught my attention in a way that few 'crime' genre books do by themselves.
Danny is an amusing narrator, fitting well within the tropes of the genre. But it's Rowland's self-aware take on the character that makes it interesting to read. There are things that are ridiculous (a man's kettle trying to kill him for instance), and the author knows how to believably work this into a noir novel through his character's sarcastic commentary.
So far this serial is in it's infancy, with only two chapters available. But I foresee a strong following and great things from this serial, so get in early and show your support for one of the more unique ideas I've come across in a long time!
